Support, Obey and Defend

Well, my grandkid had a civics paper due,
Said, "Grandpa, what's an oath?" I said, "I'll look it up for you."
Got the state constitution up on the kitchen screen,
Found the oath the county officers take, shortest sermon I've seen.
Elected town officers sign the same one, the statute says,
And it goes "support, obey and defend", the U.S. one and ours, no less
Then the kicker "discharge the duties of my office with fidelity."
Had to look up fidelity.
Means you keep your promises. Strictly. Huh.

Support, obey and defend,
Read it out loud, then read it again,
Keep it Mayor, keep it council, council my friends
Support, obey and defend.

Then I pulled up the Fourth Amendment, plain as day
"The right of the people to be secure", that's how it starts, I'd say
"No Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause,
Supported by Oath", well, I set down my coffee and I paused.
There's that word again. Oath. Sittin' right there in the middle.
And it says "particularly describing", now I ain't one to fiddle,
But a camera snappin' every car that passes it by,
That ain't particular. I don't care how hard you try.

Support, obey and defend,
Read it out loud, then read it again,
Keep it Mayor, keep it council, council my friends
Support, obey and defend.

Now I'll grant you, no Wyoming statute says
You need a warrant for these plates today
But the oath don't wait on Cheyenne to pass a bill
Vote to take 'em down, and the oath'll fit the bill.

Support, obey and defend,
Read it out loud, then read it again,
Keep it Mayor, keep it council, council my friends
Support, obey and defend.

Fidelity.
Looked it up twice.
Means you keep your promises.
